Gold awards were in abundance on 26th March 2014 when the final leg of the 2013-2014 BPEX Roadshows took place at the South of England Showground.
Pork butchers from all over the region brought their very best products to the event to compete in the Regional Pork Product Excellence Awards, hoping to make it through to the national final at London’s Butchers’ Hall in June.
Two of the principal objectives of the South of England Agricultural Society are to support and encourage the development of food production and animal husbandry, so it is a perfect fit to host this event at the South of England Showground.
Standards were exceptionally high, with over half of the 220 entries from 36 butchers achieving a gold award, testament to the quality of the products being produced by butchers and farm shops in the South of England.
Scooping the Overall Champion title for the South of England on the day was Chris Cripps of Greens of Pangbourne for his ‘Chorizo Stuffed Pork Cutlets’, a combination of locally-produced pork and homemade chorizo, which will go forward to the final in June.
Claire Holland, BPEX product marketing manager, said: “We’ve been hosting the southern leg of our BPEX Regional Roadshows and Product Excellence Awards for butchers at the South of England Showground for many years now. We keep coming back because the team caters for our every need which helps us to make the event a great success.
“The Showground has sufficient space to enable us to process and judge hundreds of product entries from butchers in the area, plus it also provides us with the perfect backdrop to host the awards. The central location makes it easy for butchers to get to and we have entries from right across the South East – from Berkshire to Bognor – as a result!”
