Equine influenza vaccinations

Horses/ponies must have been vaccinated within 12 months before the show but not less than 7 days of arriving at the show.

Are you up to date with the current equine influenza vaccination advice?

After much discussion between the major equestrian sporting bodies over the past few years, there have been significant adjustments to the primary course (first three ‘flu vaccines) which came into effect from the 1st January 2024.

Navigating the pathway to compliance across multiple disciplines is always a challenge so we have distilled this to one set of simple guidance to help.

  • ***The second vaccination must be given 21-60 days after the first. The third vaccination must then be given 150-180 days after the second.****

Regularly competing horses, those under five years of age, or any horses and ponies mixing with the aforementioned categories, are advised to continue giving boosters every six months.

Needless to say each discipline has their own idiosyncrasies and it remains the owner’s responsibility to ensure vaccinations comply with the given event site and discipline.

PLEASE NOTE: neither vaccination certificates nor passports should be sent to the show office prior to the event. Random checks will be carried out on the showground during the show.

Foal vaccinations

In-foal mares that have already had vaccinations of the primary equine influenza course should be vaccinated 4 to 6 weeks before the foal is due to be born.

Foals should commence the primary course of vaccination for equine influenza at six months old.

We urge all owners to adhere to strict biosecurity protocols at all times.

Vaccinations are subject to local risk assessments by the attending veterinarians.

PLEASE NOTE: neither vaccination certificates nor passports should be sent to the show office prior to the event. Random checks will be carried out on the showground during the show.
