Membership of the South of England Agricultural Society has been a gift that keeps on giving. We not only have free entry into the Spring and Autumn Shows and especially love the South of England Show - the finest countryside and farming showpiece in the south - but also know that our small contribution helps nurture and educate those that will be charged with looking after the countryside in the future and that our farming will be in safe hands. This is all thanks to the charitable work of the Society Richard Copeland & Kay Smith, Joint Members since 2007

Connect with the Countryside day
Connect with the Countryside is one of the Society’s most important events of the year. Now in its thirteenth year, it has attracted 25,000 primary school pupils from East and West Sussex, Surrey and Brighton and Hove to the South of England Showground, where they discover and learn about food, farming, the countryside and the environment. Paul Harrington, who is a teacher at Carden Primary School, Brighton, said "We are situated next to the countryside in Brighton but many of the children don’t experience it and it’s often their first encounter with rural life. We have been visiting Connect with the Countryside for the last few years and it's always one of the highlights for pupils and staff. The rich variety of activities that are on offer allows the pupils to engage with completely new and unique experiences that would otherwise be completely inaccessible to them. Through the encouragement of an active hands on approach to the day, the pupils gain valuable and memorable lessons that not only consolidate many areas of the national curriculum but also offer enrichment experiences that deepen and challenge their understanding of the world around them. In the past, we’ve had many pupils come away from the day in thoughtful reflection as to possible future career choices as a result of their day.

Nuffield Farming Scholarship
The South of England Agricultural Society has sponsored Nuffield Scholarships since 1979. Scholars are chosen because of their potential to provide leadership within the farming industry and rural community and to raise standards as a result of their work. The SEAS Nuffield Scholar for 2015 was Doug Wanstall whose study subject was 'Free range egg production, building resilience and managing the transition into a mainstream commodity market place' and  focused on how businesses can help themselves build and maintain profitability and make moves to avoid some of the volatility that the farming industry is exposed to currently. "I was highly privileged to have been awarded a Nuffield Scholarship to study 'Building Financial Resilience in Free Range Egg Production' kindly sponsored by the South of England Agricultural society. The experience was fun, informative and life changing, my Nuffield journey could not have happened without the support of the SEAS.

International Farmlink Network
The International Farmlink Network committee administers travel bursary awards offered by the South of England Agricultural Society on an annual basis. Applications are invited from those of any age who live in the SEAS area and who are looking to travel in order to progress their careers in a land based profession. Awards have been made for a wide variety of trips all over the world and include topics such as production of cheeses and air dried beef products, viticulture tourism opportunities, fish farming, dairy and sheep placements and many more. One recent winner travelled to New Zealand to investigate opportunities to dry sheep milk into a powdered form that could potentially be used as the basis for an infant milk formula and another travelled to Denmark to learn more about cattle judging, specifically with reference to the Blonde d’Aquitaine breed. The bursary represents a fantastic opportunity to explore further enhancement of a career in land based industries, with many successful applicants going on to bring their expertise to the Society for the benefit of others.
