Send A Cow Charity Supported By Craftsman Competition - 05/06/2008

The Year of Food and Farming will be embraced internationally at the South of England Show thanks to a pioneering scheme to support farmers in the Third World.

Organisers of the Young Craftsman of the Year competition have cleared space in their popular marquee to showcase the work of the Christian-based charity Send A Cow.

The display is the brainchild of committee chairman Sarah Peay, a long time supporter of the charity, who felt it matched the ideals of the Year of Food and Farming.

Send a Cow was founded 20 years ago when a small group of UK farmers decided to send cows to Uganda to support poor farming families. The recipients then passed the first female calf to another family, and the gift multiplied – bringing benefits of both milk and manure to fertilise vegetable plots.

Sarah said: “Like all the best ideas, it is both simple and effective. The concept has now spread to include other livestock from other charitable organisations, but Send a Cow retains an uncomplicated and focussed approach.

“My father was a keen supporter and he shared his enthusiasm with me.  I believe we should try to help those less fortunate than ourselves in the Third World and this charity achieves that with direct, practical help.

Send a Cow enables poor farmers in Africa to become self reliant by providing livestock, training and advice. We can provide the means and the skills to work their way out of poverty for good

“Here at Young Craftsman of the Year, we are all about giving people chances in life – so we are only too delighted in this Year of Food and Farming to create space for such a worthy and appropriate cause.”
