Award of honour to Mr John Bishop OBE

The South of England Agricultural Society’s 2015 Award of Honour for Berkshire was made to Mr John Bishop OBE for his outstanding work promoting good farming and environmental practice.

After graduating with a BSc in Agriculture from Reading University in 1971, John went on to work at Churn Estates in Blewbury before going on to becoming Farm Manager at Rushall Farm in Bradfield in 1974. In 2000, Rushall became an organic farm, under the management of John, a keen promoter of organic farming. In 2008, he was declared an Organic Hero by the Soil Association.

Through the John Simonds Trust, set up by John Bishop and the Simonds family after the untimely death of John Simonds at Rushall Farm in 1983, he has led many young people to a knowledge and love of the countryside and has fostered much needed understanding between farming and the general public.

John is a multi-award winning, hard-working and charitable farmer who has done a great deal to promote the agricultural industry and provide links between town and country.

Also presented were two further awards. The Long Service Award to agricultural, horticultural, forestry workers and grooms is presented to employees of Farmers and Landowners who have completed a minimum of 40 years’ service without intermission on the same Farm/Estate or under the same employer. The 2015 Awards were presented to Mr Brian Cable who has served 40 years at Iford Farms Ltd, Lewes and Mr Ken Thornby who has served 52 years at Roadend Farme in Rye.

The Fellowship Award is made to an individual in recognition of his or her outstanding contribution to the Society over many years. This prestigious award is very special and only a very few individuals are honoured in this way. In 2015 the award was presented for only the sixth time to Mrs Jenny Craven in recognition of all that she has done in respect of both the South of England Dog Show and the Society.
